Public Defense of a Master’s Thesis Held in the Department of Civil Engineering – College of Engineering

The public defense of the Master’s thesis submitted by Ms. Khadija Hassan Ouda was held in the Department of Civil Engineering for her thesis entitled:
“Optimum Proportions and Properties of Geopolymer Lightweight Aggregate Concrete.”

The defense took place at Ibn Al-Haytham Hall, Department of Civil Engineering, on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

The examination committee was composed of:

  • Prof. Dr. Maan Salman Hassan – Chair

  • Assist. Prof. Dr. Aseel Madallah Mohammed – Member

  • Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Anis Ahmed – Member

  • Prof. Dr. Amir Abdulrahman Hilal – Member and Supervisor

The aim of this study was to determine the optimum mix proportions of geopolymer mortar components by adopting a statistical approach using Minitab software, and subsequently applying these proportions to produce geopolymer lightweight aggregate concrete with a density of approximately 1350 kg/m³. Fly ash (a by-product of coal-fired power plants) was used as an alternative binder to cement and was later replaced with a natural alternative material (metakaolin).

The defense was attended by the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Abdul Ahmed, the Head of the Department, Assist. Prof. Dr. Hamid Aswad Mohammed, as well as a number of faculty members and postgraduate students.

Following an in-depth discussion by the examination committee, the candidate successfully passed with a “Satisfactory” grade.

Congratulations to the candidate on earning her degree, with best wishes for continued success in her academic journey, and appreciation to the examination committee for their efforts.
